New circulation information from the Alliance for Audited Media (AAM) shows free daily newspapers dominate in New York City, with Metro leading the pack. With 1.4 million readers in print and online Metro is New York’s most read and highest circulation free daily newspaper in New York.

Every week, Metro reaches 1 in 5 adults living or working in Manhattan – a target audience of young, active professionals. With more than 1,000 distribution points, including hand promoters and racks located within MTA subway stations, it’s easy for readers to pick up a paper on their way into work or school.

Looking at the five boroughs of New York City, the two free dailies of Metro and AM New York clearly dominate with 68% of the market share. In fact, Metro distributes more copies in NYC than the Daily News and the Post combined!

In NYC, Metro’s circulation is concentrated in Manhattan with 118K daily copies – twice more than the Daily News and the Post combined. Also, Metro is Queen’s highest circulated daily newspaper.

As a commuter newspaper, place of distribution and residence are not fully correlated. For example, Metro distributes 9% of its NYC circulation in Brooklyn, yet 25% of its NYC readers reside in Brooklyn and distributes only 2% of copies in the Bronx, yet 15% of readers reside in the Bronx.
